First, are you wanting a casual, sophisticated or romantic look? Do you want a traditional look with lots of flowers and candle light, a more contemporary feel with silver and white orbs, or a romantic look with layers of flowing fabrics.
Second, it is important to know your budget. This will determine how many decorations you will be able to have. Whether a decorator will do all the setting up/taking down or if you will need to rent decorations and have family and friends do some or all of the setting up/taking down. If budget is an issue, choose only two or three wedding decorations or decorating ideas that will really make a visual impact.
